Senyu Season 1 Review

senyuu

Senyu is a comedy about a hero and a soldier who despite their contrasting personality’s and agendas? have to work together to somehow defeat the demon lord Rchimedes who was sealed away a thousand years ago by a legendary hero, by fighting their way through his hordes of demons who he has sent until he can gather the energy to fully revive himself. Senyu was originally a 4 panel gag manga written by Robinson Haruhara and has been adapted into a 2 season anime, I am going to be reviewing just season 1, for anyone who might be interested in the series and is still sceptical about whether or not to watch it.

*WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD (I will try keep spoilers to a minimum if any however if I do start to stray into spoilers you have been warned)

Senyu is a short 13 episode series with each episode lasting around 5 minutes, it has an engaging story which keeps you engaged throughout its 13 episodes and has plenty of jokes straight from episode one and a cast of interesting characters which really help to piece the story together and make it flow nicely, this series takes the fantasy hero story and flips it on its head with Alba quickly learning that being a hero isn’t all that it’s made out to be, the relationship between the main hero Alba and the Soldier Ross is such a joy to watch with Ross being about as much help to Alba as a broken leg, and the hero being incredibly weak at the start of the series and having to working his way up. you really feel the characters grow throughout the series and really care about them, and you end each episode wanting more. With each episode only lasting 5 minutes it’s a very short series to get though, however it’s nicely paced. The series really matures as it goes along however it never strays from its comedy roots. I highly suggest this series especially if you like the fantasy or comedy genre, or animes such as Konosuba, Gintama, Cuticle Detective Inaba, Daily Life of High School Boys and Nichijou. I originally stumbled across Senyu when trying to find comedy anime series, decided to watch the first episode and stuck with it and I’m so glad I did, because it was such a joy to watch, the animation, the characters and the story really bring this series to life and you can tell that a lot of care went into making it.

This part in the review is normally where you would put the bad points of the anime however Senyu is such a hard series to fault, especially if you like this genre of anime, which I do 😛 the only issue I have with it is that I wish there was more!

If you’re looking for a serious, gritty or longer fantasy series then Senyu isn’t for you, however you might prefer series such as Brynhildr in the Darkness, The Fate/Stay Night franchise or Berserk, however if you’re after a short, funny and slightly crazy fantasy anime then look no further!

  1. I enjoyed this post! I don’t think you should worry about being biased since we’re all biased at the end of the day and it’s easier to embrace it than write objectively (which in reality is a lot less interesting).

You might consider this biased… but the fact that this is the first show I’ve become aware of with a character of the same name as me makes me want to watch the show. Not to mention that he looks exactly like a black haired version of Cloud Strife! (To me anyway)
